Pepo Galán’s (Málaga, 1981) musical journey began in the early 1990s as a self-taught musician, playing in various bands and exploring different genres in a constant search for his own unique sound. Whether playing bass, guitar, or drums, Pepo connected more specific genres like punk and metal while also venturing into broader territories like experimentation. Over time, a new world opened up within his musical sphere: the universe of electronic music. He demonstrated his dynamic experience as a DJ in some of Andalusia’s most important clubs and with Enfermería, a techno project with musician and sound engineer Senmove. In this new facet, he manages to synthesize his vast experience as a music lover into his work, settling into styles closely related to electronic music.
With the new millennium, Pepo Galán became interested in trip-hop, a genre that helped him fuse electronic music with instruments through samples, leading him to join the Maydrïm project. But electronic music and the search for his own sound remained within him until, little by little, he became a full-fledged member of the electronic music scene, exploring both its more radical and experimental side and its more contemplative and serene facets. In recent years, Pepo Galán has continued to build his musical body of work, releasing personal pieces such as *Human Values Disappear* (El Muelle Records, 2017) – released on El Muelle Records, a label he co-founded – and *For Victoria* (Fluid Audio, 2019). He has also composed music for works by choreographer Sita Ostheimer and contributed to two annual volumes of *Pop Ambient*, a compilation curated by Wolfgang Voigt (GAS) and released by the prestigious Kompakt label. Always open to collaborations that enrich his musical universe, Galán has been part of Dear Sailor – an elegant ambient pop project with Paraguayan artist Lee Yi – and Stranded – a transoceanic project with Colombian artist Gärtner.
He has also forged interesting partnerships with leading figures in the ambient scene such as Max Würden, Isaac Helsen, Shinji Wakasa, Benoit Pioulard, Karen Vogt, Rafael Anton Irisarri, Warmth, Suso Saiz, Markus Guentner and Joachim Spieth. Ambient movement: the music of Pepo Galán Pepo Galán’s universe stems from a duality, a contrast between electronic and acoustic elements, a kind of conflict of forces aimed at creating a new world, a unique sound that stretches ambient melodic lines while containing a certain unease and disquiet, as if that very balance were teetering on a fine line. Not forgetting a certain pop sensibility in his sound, with the piano occasionally taking center stage in some of his compositions.
This attempt to harmonize elements also appears between the digital and the analog, between playing with the past through micro-textures extracted from bygone eras and collected by the artist himself, and a present crafted in the moment. The result of this interplay is a future where everything has a reason for being, a universe of minimalist ambient sounds full of emotion and a certain sacredness, which combine with doses of evocation and audiovisual storytelling, creating a soundtrack of a fictional film where vital scenes recalled by the artist himself coexist.
